While Naturism became a major social phenomenon already in the early decades of the 20th century, cinema got interested in it for real and on a wider scale only during the 1950s when erotica and lifestyles deemed healthy seemed to fuse ever more into a unity wholesome and horny. In this context, Nudist Paradise (1959) is particularly remarkable as it was made not by an interested amateur or sexploitation maestro, but a certified industry figure: Charles Saunders, so far known as a specialist for tough noir fare – who sunk his career by bringing all-out erotica into England’s cultural mainstream through the story of a guy who has to become a nudist to get the girl he wants.
